A man (late 20s) has been arrested after breaking into a house in Co Cork this morning and assaulting a woman using a metal travel mug.

he woman, who is in her 50s, was struck repeatedly with a metal travel mug when she was confronted by a burglar at her home in Mahon.

The man broke into the family home around 2.30am today and attacked the woman when she surprised him as he was ransacking the property.

Another family member was awoken by the noise of the attack and the raider fled when they intervened.

The woman had suffered injuries to her head.

Her injuries are not described as serious though the woman was very traumatised by her ordeal.

No property was taken during the burglary.

The man was later arrested and taken to Bridewell Garda Station, Cork where he is currently detained under Section 4 of the Criminal Justice Act, 1984.
