'We bailed them out and now the banks bailing on us'

Bank of Ireland has announced the closure of 103 branches in Ireland.

The branch network will be reduced by 88, from 257 locations to 169, from September in the Republic of Ireland.

Calls have been made to delay the closures in the face of the COVID-19 pandemic, with the bank accused of using the slowdown in footfall during lockdown to its advantage.

Today, Dublin Live spoke to some of the customers of the local branch in Phibsboro.

One local highlighted that: “We bailed them out and now the banks bailing on us.”

She said: ““It’s very simple, they were bailed out in the bail out and I think it’s atrocious.

“They’re there to serve customers. It’s a pathetic excuse, they’re purely for profit, they’ve made their profits on the back of this country and now they’re pulling out.”

Another local said it wouldn’t really impact him, but it will have an affect on his father.

He said: “Me personally no, but my father banks here and he would. He’s old school, he’d use the bank a bit more but I’d be online these days mostly.

“There’s less reason for people to come to Phibsboro, so it’s kind of bad for the area in general.”

A young lady also expressed her concern for the older generation.

She explained: “All the older people haven’t got online banking, they don’t have this technology the way us young people would. They can’t come down to lodge their money or whatever they need (anymore).”

An older man voiced his concern about the bank shutting down in the area.

He said: “It’s a busy area, there’s a lot of people, it’s a residential area as well. It’ll affect a lot of people.

“I’m not on the online bank, I don’t trust the online banking. It’ll make it awkward really, I’m passing through Phibsboro everyday so I’ll have to make other arrangements.”

And lastly, another local was shocked at the news of the local branch closing in September.

She told Dublin Live: ““I’m really annoyed over it, I was with them a few days ago and there was no word of the closures at all. I’m not happy about it at all

“It was one of the few services left – it’s a little bit depressing in my opinion, a lot of places have closed.”
