Travel expert Eoghan Corry says Lapland is not the best place to bring your kids at Christmas

Lapland is a highlight for many families at Christmas time. Especially after the 18-month-long travel ban, it’s understandable that some families will justify the big expense to give their children an experience they will cherish forever.

However there are more reasonably priced and equally magical Christmas trips to give your children, according to Irish travel expert Eoghan Corry.

According to Eoghan, while Finland has created a winter wonderland in Lapland, in his opinion it is overpriced and over commercialised.

He told RSVP Live: “Lapland is expensive, but it’s once in a lifetime. You would actually get a week-long holiday in the Canaries for the same price as a day trip to Lapland.

“Ireland, Japan and the UK are the three big consumers of Lapland and it is a good experience.

“The issue with Lapland is that parents spend so much money to go there and then everywhere they turn there’s people trying to sell you more stuff, and they catch you out because they know it’s once in a lifetime you’ll spend the extra cash”.

If you do opt for a Lapland trip, Eoghan advises that you wait until children are old enough to remember – and withstand – the festivities.

“There’s not much you can do to bring the costs down because the aircraft is flown to Ireland especially for it. If you opt for the three day experience it does work out to be a little bit less. The danger with that though is having a child with enough stamina to withstand the three days.

“The children love it and they head off all excited in the morning and they come back absolutely exhausted”.

If you’re looking for a more reasonably priced but equally magical Christmas experience for the kids, Eoghan suggests you opt for Disneyland Paris instead.

“The run up to Christmas is one of the best times to visit Disneyland because they’ve got the Christmas parade and all the characters and Disney on ice.

“It’s cheaper and you have to think which is going to deliver the better value. You can dress your little girl up like a princess and bring her to the parade and the ‘real’ princesses will wave at her. When you’re dealing with making memories, I do think that is better value”.
