She said: “It’s three years ago this weekend since my breakdown so it’s a huge thing for me to finally be back full-time.

“I love Classic Hits and the music so I’ll be enjoying the show as much as anyone listening.

“The music will be 80’s, 90’s and more, lots of gossip and participation from listeners, who at the end of the day always make a show for me, they’re the stars.

“I’m like a kid at Christmas.”

Nikki also spoke fondly of her colleague Gareth O’Callaghan, who stepped down from his radio role recently due to ill health.

The former RTE radio presenter sent out an email to his colleagues revealing that he had Multiple System Atrophy which is a very rare and deadly neuro-degenerative illness which attacks the body’s central nervous system.

The 57-year-old revealed that the illness is incurable and deadly, and has had to leave the show as he wanted to fight the disease.

“Sadly it is incurable and progressive,” he said adding, “I won’t back down.

“Time to do battle with this beast and fight it for as long as I can.”

Nikki admitted she was delighted to be taking over the mid-morning slot, but was tough due to Gareth’s illness.

She continued: “It’s a bittersweet gift as Gareth is retiring from radio due to illness, Damien Farrelly is moving to the afternoons and I’m taking over mid-morning from September 3.

“Gareth has been an inspiration to me for decades and I’ve been lucky to call him a colleague and a friend, I wish nothing but the best to both Gareth and his partner Paula for their new journey into the future together.”

Nikki’s new role on Classic Hits 4FM comes just in time as her daughter, with ex-husband Frank Black, Farah starts school next week.

The Bray native said: “Farah starts school next Thursday so timing is perfect … her new chapter starts and so does mine.

“I’m excited to get started and enter into the workforce full-time again.”
