TV presenter Mairead Ronan believes she was “written off” as a new mother on Dancing With The Stars.
She gave birth to daughter Bonnie just four months before filming began and said the doubters gave her extra motivation to take home the Glitterball Trophy.
Mairead, 38, told the Irish Mirror: “Mothers are written off, because people will say, ‘She just had her third child’.
“I was at 18/1 at the start of the show so fair play to whoever had me at that.
“It’s the same working in marketing, in a bank, wherever – going back to work people will say things like, ‘She’s just going to leave early’. It was motivating for me.
“I said no when they asked me originally [to take part on DWTS] because I thought I won’t be good enough.
“It was actually my husband who said, ‘Go and give it a lash, I’ll take care of everything’.
“If it wasn’t for him I wouldn’t have done it.”
Mairead secured her place in the last five of the hit reality show last Sunday alongside partner John Nolan. The Dubliner also addressed some of her online trolls, with one in particular telling her to “go home and mind your newborn”.
Mairead said: “With these things, 95% of comments will be positive, but you will always get the negative.
“There’s just so many viewers that you will get comments like that. I usually don’t give those any time of day.
“But this one I even had my dance partner John mention it to me, so I decided to share it and thankfully I got loads of support.
“I have friends who have had a tough time going back to work and these doubts are always there, so the positive reaction really gave me a lift.”
Several contestants on this year’s show have hailed the weight-loss benefits brought on by the rigorous dance routines and, new baby or not, Mairead is no exception.
She said: “There was a dress I bought in a sale in September the year before last and it’s never fit me.
“Now it’s too loose, and I’ve just had a baby.
“I’m over a stone lighter than I was for my wedding in 2015 and I worked hard to be in as good a shape as possible for that.”
