Colleagues of Fair City actress Jean Costello have said they are “deeply saddened” by her death at 76.

A statement has been issued by RTE on behalf of everyone who worked with Jean, who played Rita Doyle on the soap for 24 years.

Dubliner Jean lived in Mountjoy Square in the capital and died on St Stephen’s Day following a battle with dementia.

RTE issued a statement this evening from Brigie de Courcy, the executive producer of Fair City.

She said: “Everyone in Fair City is deeply saddened to hear about the sad passing of our former colleague Jean Costello.

“Jean was a stalwart in Fair City when she played the role of Rita Doyle. She entertained the homes of millions of Irish people for over 20 years as she was one of Carrigstown’s most loved characters.

“We send our deepest condolences to her family and wide circle of friends and colleagues. Ar dheis Dé go raibh a hanam.”

Jean joined the RTE soap in 1989, and bowed out in 2013 after her character Rita died on-screen.

Her sister Sylvia Murray told Dublin Live that Jean’s life would be remembered in a celebration “full of singing and dancing”.

She said: “Jean will be cremated and then afterwards we will celebrate her life by singing and dancing as she would have wanted.

“Especially by playing one of her favourite songs, Stand By Me by Ben E King. She learned to play it on the guitar and tin whistle.

“Jean was a lady. At least she’s up there now keeping my nanny company, our two angels.”

Jean is remembered by her beloved partner Seamus and children Noel, Joseph, Myles, Christy and the late Anne.

Her death notice on RIP.ie reads: “Sadly missed by her loving partner, sons, daughters-in-law, her cherished grandchildren and great-grandchildren, brother Noel, sister Sylvia, extended family, relatives, neighbours and a large circle of friends.”
