It would be “economic treason” if the Government appeals against any ruling that Ireland is owed €13billion in tax from Apple, People Before Profit has said.
A judgment is expected from the General Court of the EU today and Richard Boyd Barrett claimed there are “suggestions” the outcome will be that Ireland should be paid the money.
And the TD has encouraged the public to protest outside the Convention Centre tomorrow if the Government gives an indication it intends to appeal the outcome if it is in favour of the State.
He added it would be “utterly outrageous and unacceptable” for the Government to not accept this “owed €13billion plus interest in tax” given the current economic situation.
He said last night: “This morning we wrote to the Ceann Comhairle and the business committee to insist there would be statements in the Dail this week following the EU ruling on the Apple tax case.
“In our view it was bad enough before Covid-19 that the Irish Government wasted up to €8million in legal fees trying to prevent collecting €13billion in tax that we could use for the housing crisis, for the crisis in our public health system and for our many cash-starved public services.

“But in the context of Covid-19, and a bill that is likely to run to €20billion, we think it would be nothing short of economic treason for the Irish Government to appeal against an EU decision that €13billion should be paid to the Irish people and to the Irish Exchequer.”
Taoiseach Micheal Martin told the Dail he would have “no issue” with a debate on the ruling, but added: “By the way, the €13billion would not be available even if there were a decision to uphold the commission’s position.”
