Johnny Ward admitted he found it difficult returning to the set of Fair City following the shocking death of his former co-star Karl Shiels.
The actor is back in Carrigstown as kidnapper Ciaran Holloway for the 30th anniversary special episode.
Despite his excitement to get back on the RTE set after two years, the Dancing With The Stars finalist admitted it’s not the same place after the deaths of two main characters Karl and Tom Jordan this year.
He told Dublin Live: “It’s really difficult. I think the most difficult part is everyone is trying to get on with it but there is the mention of Karl’s character.”
Fair City bosses confirmed Karl, who played Robbie Quinn in the hit RTE drama, was set for a “huge role” in the landmark edition on September 18.
Commenting on the heartbreak still felt on the RTE set, the 32-year-old said: “People themselves are talking about him, and trying to move on but when the name Robbie comes up on the scripts everyone takes a moment.
“Especially in the read throughs as he was such a lovely guy and a character and honestly one of the nicest guys I’ve ever met. Tom Jordan the same.
“And I think Tom Jordan, not that everyone expected it or anything but he was older. With Karl, it was just out of the blue and nobody expected it.
“Two really, really lovely familiar faces gone but as Karl would say, onwards. But it is a different place without them.”
However, eager to get stuck back in to his action packed-character, Johnny said he already feels like he’s home.
He added: “I’m so happy but I was very anxious at the start, worried that I wouldn’t get into character again because it has been two-and-a-half years and when you think of it, it was 2017 and then to go back and get into it, it’s great.
“The second I stepped on the exterior set, I was like OK, let’s go.
“I just feel so lucky, the scenes they have me do, they are big stunts and stunt men in.
“He’s not the kind of character that would walk in and buy a newspaper because I wouldn’t want to do that. This is a great character and I love it.”
Yet, despite promising something “crazy” in store for Ciaran, Johnny doesn’t know how long his character will be back for.
He said: “He obviously can’t be hanging around in a pub, he has to keep a low profile but he turns around one day and decides that he is going to go back to Carrigstown to see his sister.
“He realises that she has been alive all this time so kidnapping that poor girl made no sense in the first place.”
