Leah Punch (29) from Cork, underwent the invasive surgery in Lithuania and has since lost an astonishing 10st 7lbs.

Leah told RSVP Live that she’s been overweight the majority of her life, but things took a turn for the worst when she had her son.

“I always struggled, and I was always referred to dietitians in my early teens,” said Leah. “I was always trying to lose weight. But in the end, I just accepted it really.

“But then I ended up in intensive care after having my son.”

At 22-years-old, Leah found out she was 26 weeks pregnant and began to prepare to welcome her son into the world.

At 17 stone and suffering from gestational diabetes, Leah suffered from serious complications during her boy Shaye’s birth.

Leah gained six stone in ten months after the birth of her son, Shaye, and hit 22 stone.

“My lungs were failing, I had an infection and I had to be put on a full ventilator,” said Leah. “I spent four weeks in hospital. Then when I got home my reality went from bad to worse, I suffered severe post natal depression and post traumatic stress disorder.

“I was an emotional wreck.”

“I just thought, I can’t do this anymore,” said Leah. “I reached out for help when my son was three and a half. It was always hard, I always felt hungry.”

Leah had lost weight with personal trainers and weight-loss plans over the years, but the pounds always managed to creep back on, so Leah felt the best option for her was surgery.

Leah took the plunge and went under the knife in October 2018. She has since lost a whopping 11 stone.

In the days and months after surgery Leah had to completely re-evaluate her relationship with food.

“I had to put my head down, focus on getting the protein into me, and push through the hard days,” said Leah. “Once I hit the one year mark, things got a bit easier and I actually booked loose skin removal in November for August 2021.”

"Your mind is very powerful and I know that now," said Leah. "You control your whole life. Anything is possible."

Since having the surgery and skin removal, Leah’s life has completely turned around. She has now qualified as a nutritionist and a personal trainer.

“I’m looking to go into fitness,” she said. “I know I’ll have to be mindful of my weight for the rest of my life, the surgery is only a tool.

“I could very well sit at home and eat all the crap and put on the weight. It’s an overall lifestyle change.”

She said she is the happiest she has ever been and the physical transformation is just a bonus.

“Your mind is very powerful and I know that now,” said Leah. “You control your whole life. Anything is possible.”
