A newly elected Sinn Féin TD said she couldn’t wait to see “what conspiracy is conjured up next” in a Facebook post about Máiría Cahill’s case.

Clare TD Violet-Anne Wynne made the remarks in 2014 during the controversy over former Sinn Féin leader Gerry Adams’s handling of Ms Cahill’s abuse claims.

Ms Cahill said the comments showed a “complete lack of empathy”.

Sinn Féin claimed the comments were not about Ms Cahill – but the Facebook post was deleted after the party was contacted yesterday.

On the same day the Dáil debated Ms Cahill’s case in October 2014, Ms Wynne wrote: “So Gerry Adams was asked to confront the people connected with the Maria Cahill [sic] case, now does that look like something a guilty man would do? He will finally get to say his piece and get the truth out there and then Enda [Kenny] and Michael [sic] [Micheál Martin] will have to make up something new now once he says his piece. Can’t wait for next week to see what conspiracy is conjured up next.”

Ms Cahill said: “The comments should be withdrawn and apologised for.”

Sinn Féin said the remarks were five years ago. “Her comments were clearly not about Máiría Cahill, but about attacks on Sinn Féin,” a spokesperson said. Ms Wynne has also expressed strong opposition to the HPV and other vaccinations in social media posts in recent years.
